Senior Railcard Renewal: How to Renew in Minutes (2026 Guide)
Your Senior Railcard is about to run out and you want it sorted with minimum faff. Fair enough. The good news is that renewing takes about five minutes online, and you can do it up to 30 days before your current card expires without losing any time on the new one.
How much does renewal cost in 2026?
A Senior Railcard costs £35 for one year or £80 for three years. The three year option saves you £25 compared with buying three separate one year cards, so if you know you'll keep using the trains, it's the better buy. Prices went up from £30 to £35 in March 2025, so don't be thrown if you remember paying less last time.
Renewing online (the easy way)
If you bought your current Railcard online, renewal is dead simple. Log in to your account at railcard.co.uk, pick the renewal option, pay, and you're done. No need to prove your age again, they already have your details. If you use the digital Railcard in the Railcard app, the new one appears there. If you prefer the plastic card, it comes in the post.
One tip: renew before the old card expires rather than after. You can renew up to 30 days early and the new card starts when the old one ends, so you lose nothing by doing it ahead of time.
What if you bought your card at a station?
Cards bought at ticket offices can't be renewed through an online account in the same way. You've got two options. Either take your old card to any staffed National Rail ticket office and renew there, or create an online account and buy a new card, which means proving your age once with a passport, UK driving licence or EEA identity card. Once you've gone online, every future renewal is the five minute job described above.
Pay for it with Tesco Clubcard vouchers
Here's the bit most people miss. Railcard is a Tesco Clubcard reward partner, and Clubcard vouchers are worth double when you spend them there. £17.50 in vouchers becomes £35 of Railcard credit, which covers the one year card exactly. If you shop at Tesco anyway, your weekly points can quietly pay for your train discount. There's more detail on our Tesco page.
Is it worth renewing at all?
Quick sums: the card gives you a third off most Standard and First Class fares across Britain. If a return trip normally costs you £40, the Railcard brings it down to about £26. Two or three trips a year and the £35 has paid for itself. If you barely used it last year, have a think, but for most over 60s who take the train even occasionally, it's an easy yes.
Common renewal questions
Can I renew after it's expired? Yes, there's no penalty, you just can't use the discount in the gap between cards.
Do I need a new photo? No photo is needed for the Senior Railcard, online or at the station.
Can someone renew it for me? Yes, a family member can log in and renew on your behalf, as long as it's your details on the card.
Where do I use it? Just show the card (plastic or in the app) when asked. Buying tickets online, select Senior Railcard when choosing your ticket and the discount is applied before you pay.
